Guidelines for working with web development

Published 08/24/11

Web development is an essential part of today’s computer world. We are all linked with the help of the world-wide web. The development of the web is in the hands of web developers and the designers who make it work. So, the designers and developers play an important role in making the websites function properly.

In a broad sense, web development means the development of a website for the internet. This includes, business development, e-commerce, web design, web content development, client and server scripting and web server configurations. Specifically, web development relates to the non-design aspects of website building. This refers to mark up and coding. This can be one length of text or internet applications, social business or electronic business.

Web design requires a person to plan and execute electronic media content through the internet by the web browser or other web based geographical user interfaces (GUI’s) using technology.

The aim of the designers is to create a website (a collection of electronic files). This has to have suitable content for the user to use as web pages on request. Such text and images can be placed on the web with the help of HTML, XHTML or XML tags.

When more complex material like videos, sounds and animations, Plug-ins such as Flash, QuickTime, Java run-time environment etc. can be used.

There are now standards or guidelines for working with the web. The W3C or the World Wide Web Consortium has open standards which are certain rules that have to be used while developing the web. The web developers contribute to these guidelines when they work on open source projects. This helps to improve and debug web based technology. It was started by Sir Tim Berners-Lee. It develops standards and has a full time staff looking into it.

When novices work with designing the web, or use poorly designed software, these guidelines are not followed. Before the creation of W3C, incompatible versions of HTML were offered by vendors and this led to inconsistency in the web pages. With the implementation of standards, everyone has agreed to adhere to a set of core principles and components. To get the label of W3C compliance, some recommendations have to be followed. There is no certification program. According to the standards, designers can use CGI, CSS, OWL, HTML, XHTML, DOM, XSLT, XML events etc.

The W3C has published the ‘Web Content Accessibility Guidelines’ (WCAG 1.0). This has been accepted by all as the guideline for creating accessible websites. These are general principles of accessible design.

The main aim of the guidelines is to make the web a place that people can use easily without any problems. This can be done only when the content is designed in such a way that people can access the information they want very easily.

Since the internet is used by all these days and there are many web designers, there is a necessity for guidelines to be formed. In this manner standards are set and people will be bound to follow them. With the formation of the W3C we hope that the designers will be able to do their work better. The standards are there to be followed so that the work of designers in web development will be even more effective than it is now.
