By Craig Kelley and Dale Manton - Save Downtown Kelowna Alliance

One can always tell when it’s spring-time in Kelowna. Not so much just from the departure of our not-so-appreciated winter companion the “low valley cloud”, nor the line ups at all the car washes in town or even the ramp up of golf course advertisements….no, it’s the annual spring chorus of Kelowna’s “boo birds” reminding us all of the horrible perils that any development of our waterfront will bring.

We’ve all read or heard them ad nauseum: cold and dark shadows enveloping the downtown core 24 hours a day…the loss of every citizen’s innocence and souls to the big, bad developers… a huge electric fence ensuring that only individuals with net worth’s over a million dollars will ever dip their feet into Lake Okanagan. And on and on it goes…

And to be very frank, it’s getting old. In the last civic election, the people of Kelowna spoke loud and clear – that we, the majority of citizens WANT to look at proposals that include a downtown water interface that is actually useable for its residents and tourists, instead of hiding the fact we sit beside one of the nicest lakes in the world. The mayor and every single councilor made their positions on downtown development abundantly clear, and almost to a ‘T’, every single member who got in had publicly stated that they felt downtown Kelowna needed a significant shot in the arm.

It really doesn’t need to be a scary notion. If you don’t believe it, just travel to a city who has beautiful waterfronts with – wait for it – TALL BUILDINGS! Imagine! San Diego, False Creek, Victoria…heck, even Penticton. It’s actually a significant benefit for a city to have commercial and residential activity along with useable public space along its waterfront…something Kelowna currently lacks.

I give all the credit in the world to the very vocal minority who sometimes make it seem like the majority of Kelowna’s citizens support your cause – you write a lot of articles and paint a lot of placards – but you are a few, and you need to step aside. The people have spoken.

We’ve got a bone to pick with a Forbes article we came across entitled ‘The Hidden Benefits of Social Media Marketing: Why Your Strategy May Be Working Better Than You Think.’ Now, we feel the need to clarify a few things, because the picture these guys are painting is damn-near upside down.

Forbes has delightfully placed the most random list of ‘advantages’ to being active with social media accounts, varying from points that are an absolute plain-as-day given, to ones that are complete long-shots and don’t really ever happen unless you’ve got a vigorous campaign established, which is pretty unfair to both clients and social media ‘experts’. It’s unfair to the clients because it gives off the impression that all they need to do is the bare minimum to get in on a piece of the action, and it’s unfair to the ‘experts’ because it makes what they do look like child’s play. It’s a pretty tedious and intricate ordeal to develop and execute an effective social media campaign from which the organization sees gains such as these miraculous ‘snowball effects’ and ‘Big Wins’.

Chances are that you probably won’t get to dig in to these advantages. That’s not to say that some of these points aren’t good to make and that they won’t help your business. You’ll most certainly benefit from the brand visibility, recognition, exposure, website traffic, and being ‘on the curve’ rather than ‘ahead’ of it, because, let’s face it, that curve peaked a while ago and it’s no secret that this is the face of a new game…so let’s not give ourselves too much credit.

Because of articles like this one, it’s no wonder the term ‘social media’ is seen as such a joke these days. Being ‘in’ on social media doesn’t count if you’ve shelled out the bare minimum. You only have a LinkedIn account?! And you haven’t been personally asked by CNN to do a two-page spread about your local clothing store? Startling…

This bare minimum attempt doesn’t pass as acceptable. Not even a little bit. But then you wonder why your page isn’t experiencing all the miracles you’ve read about? Gasp! They Lied! Yeah, no shit buddy. Are you surprised? Of course everybody’s out to make it sound as easy as possible – if there’s one thing you can count on, it’s for human beings to discredit eachother without remorse. So now you’re left with your mouse in your hand wondering what the hell to do next?

There’s a reason ‘social media experts’ exist, and it’s to deal with technologically depraved victims like yourself. All of this ‘gimme’ crap that other article talked about like ‘Big Wins’ and ‘snowball effects’ are pretty big oversights to just toss into the ringer with basic elements that actually DO fall into the ‘you’re barely even trying’ category. This is a hella confusing list and should probably disbarred. It’s just not fair to pass off information like this to people who have absolutely zero clue what they’re talking about. It gives them the way-wrong idea; the idea that they’ve ‘got it’ by creating a ‘Suzie’s Horses’ Facebook page, taking a picture of the ranch, making it your timeline photo, and expecting the sign-ups to start crawling at your property line for a chance to get onto your goods – it doesn’t work like that.

If that last bit sounded a lot like you, put down your drink, stop crying, and get in touch with us. We’ll help you wipe your tears, clean up your act, and get a Lamborghini of a social media campaign sorted out for you to brag all over town about.

If the ‘Harlem Shake’ has taught us anything in the past week or so, it’s that social media’s awesome power …

If the ‘Harlem Shake’ has taught us anything in the past week or so, it’s that social media’s awesome power is the very thing that will lead to the destruction of whatever it touches. Well, not necessarily everything; just the stuff that’s ‘good enough’ to somehow go viral and/or gain obscene popularity.

This isn’t a new phenomenon. Radio stations are huge culprits of overplaying material to the point where people would rather hear a cover of the latest ‘hit song’ recorded by a crew of powertool-wielding Russians instead of the original. Now we can see a heavy bleed-through of this same faux-pas in social media that seems to be getting worse with each passing day, and we’re running out of time.

Radio stations hype up songs because they’re generally paid to do so in some way, shape, or form. However the public is pretty aware of this, so most people tend to take the radio with a grain of salt. But now, not only are materials being shared at an expansive rate thanks to the phenomenon of ‘virality’, but they’re being shared in a very biased way due to the nature of social media engines. You either ‘Like’ something, or dislike it enough to share it out of spite without holding back on profound intellectual critiques…or misinformed snap-judgements…whichever you prefer. Most people’s primary contact with viral material is already sprinkled and seasoned with feelings of distaste or praise depending on who shared it. This, in combination with rampant oversharing, overplaying, and plain ol’ overdoin’ it, has made the lifelines of viral content quite short. For instance, a few days ago we were all in stitches watching the following video…but not anymore; and it’s only been a week!

After a while, no matter how badly you wanted to a commemorative tattoo or theme wedding about Gangam Style, KONY2012, the recent-yet-late ‘Harlem Shake’ catastrophe that struck the internet like a bad disease, or any other viral phenomenon, you will get sick of it. And now, thanks to social media, you’ll get to experience the range of emotions from ‘uuuh. wow. tell everyone!’ all the way through to ‘don’tgonearmewiththatshitanymore’ in a matter of days; even hours. Joy.

Along with the oversharing comes the unfortunate pre-conceived notions about the content all because a guy you used to work with or some weird younger sibling of a friend of yours got all hot and bothered and shared it, which is unfair to the viewer because of their now-tainted view, and robs the creator of any chance that the public will formulate their own opinions about the content. Everybody’s a journalist nowadays, stripping most people of having a fair shot at formulating an opinion about what they’re seeing.

It’s got to the point where people do weird things such as handing out obscene amount of ‘Likes’ to things to actually they don’t like at all, or start making the next goal in their life to fundraise money to take down a foreign warlord. One day you think you’re giving some money towards a good cause to take down some demonic foreign tyrant and his army of gun slinging children. Then before you know it, the guy you gave your money to is masturbating in an intersection, and the warlord’s been off the grid for years.

Sadly, lots of good content never sees the light of day due to their lack of ‘grabber’. If the public’s reaction to something isn’t good, the material is essentially stillborn. However, no-matter how good, viral content can’t expect to stick around at the abusive share-rate we’ve got going on. Just because social media’s reach is relatively limitless (yes, it’s limited to the user base, but those are huge, so we’re sticking with ‘limitless’) doesn’t mean you can’t get too much of a good thing. In fact, now, the less of a good thing you can get the better, out of fear for the viral rise and fall effect. Did we mention that the ‘Harlem Shake’ is a 10 month-old song which had never seen the light of day aside from some small circles, that magically skyrocketed to the top of the iTunes charts last week in direct correlation with the viral video trend?

Sure, after seeing an ‘incredible’ viral video so many times you may have a sour taste in your mouth, but that doesn’t mean it’s ‘the worst’, right?! No. Not yet. It goes deeper.

The worst isn’t the corporate or financial motives behind the videos, nor the public’s growing awareness of this. The worst is when spin-offs occur. The feeble attempts at viral bandwagoning done by anyone with a video camera and a half-ass costume that want in on some of the action. This is how you end up with catastrophes:

NO. STOP IT! #youredoingitwrong

You’re ruining it for everyone. Please, we’re begging you, just stop. It’s embarassing, not even close, and just plain wrong.

Many can relate to the annoyance felt when everybody around you all-of-a-sudden becomes the biggest fan of a band you’ve been into for a while (and possibly made fun of for being their fan?) after the release of a sub-par, overplayed hit song. Now you’re the mecca for all things – insert mildly creative band name here – and fall victim of being asked to every show of theirs within a daylight’s-drive radius, making you want to burn all their records and use their tour shirts as toilet paper.

This is how we feel about internet virality. Bottom line, there’s nothing more irritating than something you enjoyed being played out. Let’s leave the good videos alone to take their place in internet and social halls of fame and let that be the end of it.

The video below summarizes how we feel quite perfectly. Leave virality be. Give it a rest and spare us from watching social media chew it’s arm off.

The walls are closing in as the social media phenomenon titans Myspace and Facebook near-simultaneously experimented with new roll-outs over the past month.

For those of you who weren’t around for the Myspace hype the first time, they were basically running the show for social media, period, for quite some time until Facebook came along and plowed it like a field. Myspace was left in the woods, wounded and crying, while Facebook stole its clothes and ran off with them…it’s a sad story really. Days, months, years passed as Facebook’s popularity skyrocketed while Myspace slunk into hiding, discarded as quickly as VHS in the dawn of DVD’s.

New kids entered the game like Twitter, Google+ and Pinterest, showing no signs of trouble keeping up with the times. We’re not sure why, or where, but one day Myspace decided to wipe the running mascara off its face, hit the gym, and get a full-blown makeover. Now preparing for its red-carpet unveiling, Myspace is the most highly-anticipated social media revelation to hit cyberspace. Facebook, in its typically jealous and self-conscious form, is getting worried. ‘How can I stay relevant?’ it asks.

In an attempt to wow users away from the new Myspace, who has been sending beta invites to eager and early subscribers (They event sent us an e-mail last night reminding us that they’ll be ready soon. How courteous of them.) , Facebook decided to show off its new colours. Not literally; come on now, that’d be silly. If they got rid of or changed from their currently staple and immediately recognizable blue, the internet would have a meltdown trying to decipher the ‘Who, What, Where, When, Why and How’ of it all, and that would just be too stressful. Instead, Facebook’s trying out a some fancy new timeline features to try and ease and improve the user experience…but will it be enough?

People love new things. Especially shiny new things. Not only is Myspace’s new roll-out boasting unprecedented and aesthetically delightful user interface, but it’s even got some silver colourway added in there. Shiny and new. Nailed it.

The new Myspace is a highly anticipated release to say the least. To learn more about it, check out the following video, and/or our blog post about it – The New Myspace Roll-out Could Save Their Ass

The end of the world never came, so here we are back to the grind at the start of what …

The end of the world never came, so here we are back to the grind at the start of what we’d like to hope will be another great year.

One of the biggest issues with the new year is getting back into work mode. Everybody suffers from this (you’re lying if you deny it) including ourselves, so we’ve decided to pass along a few tools that will help ease the blow and keep your productivity optimized. We’ve gathered a compilation of some of our favourite extensions for our favourite browser: Google Chrome.

Not a Chrome user? You should be. Here’s a few Chrome extensions and apps to take some of the pain out of your first days back at work.

Short Link Getter: Does it drive you insane when a colleague passes a link along that’s about as long as the first chapter of Lord of the Rings? Fear no more. The Short Link Getter is the perfect tool to add to your browser to have a short URL for whatever page you’re on with the click of a button. No more are the days of copying, pasting into a shortener, re-copying your tiny URL, and sending it off. Just click, copy, and paste.

Google Mail Checker and YouSendIt For Webmail: Like us, many use GMail to keep our e-mail in order; personal or professional. With these two plugins, GMail just got even better. Receive instant inbox updates right to your toolbar with the Google Mail Checker, preventing having to incessantly check your inbox to see if you’ve got mail. Now, you just know. Have trouble sending large files through GMail? Just download the YouSendIt for Webmail extension and watch your fears melt away. Easily attach large files right to your GMail to share them with colleagues and friends alike with the click of a button. No more need 3rd party sites/programs or “WHY WON’T THIS SEND? BE SMALLER!” moments, just a simplified process.

Highlight to Search: One of the smaller aggravations encountered around many offices is the highlight, copy, paste, and search process, which can be tedious when doing ample research. This extension allows for a quick and easy process. Just highlight the keyword, click, and Google it. It’s that easy.

TooManyTabs and Page Snooze: A predominant issue when conducting research is the eventual maelstrom of ‘tabs’ that consumes the top of your browser. Ever wished for a way to save some of these for later, or to organize them is an efficient way? These two extensions allow you to do just that. Organize and categorize your tabs with TooManyTabs, or simply put them to sleep for up to two weeks with Page Snooze. Happy tabbing!

Speed Dial: If you’re a frequent flyer to a set of specific sites, this is your dream. Speed Dial allows users to customize their ‘new tab’ to have a set grid of sites ready to go at the click of a mouse rather than a) remembering them all, and b) typing them in one after the other. Getting to your sources is now a total breeze.

Adblock for Youtube™: Last but not least, we present you the most handy gadget of the bunch. Not because it improves productivity, but because it’s the internet’s Advil when it comes to the ever-annoying ads that YouTube displays before, during, and after their videos. Now you can get back to how it used to be and skip all that garbage with the Adblock for Youtube™ extension.

Now, get out there, download Google Chrome, and start your year off the right way: as easy as possible.

Have some personal favourites that we missed? Be sure to share them in the comments below.
